Forward to Practical Colposcopy
third edition

It is significant in the history of obstetrics and gynecology that a procedural technique used in mainstream academic teaching as well as throughout the world in the practice of gynecology has been developed by an individual research scholar in his private laboratory setting. Dr. René Cartier’s perfection of the electric loop instrument for cervical biopsy and resection as a simple, accurate, and cost effective technique has changed the management of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. This third edition of his classic text, Practical Colposcopy, illustrates the newer modifications of this technique and updates some of the theories and changes of human papilloma virus infections, cytologic classifications and preinvasive endocervical lesions.

In this new edition, Dr. Cartier is fortunate to have his daughter, Dr. Isabelle Cartier, join him as co-author. Together they have expanded the breadth and depth of the material in the earlier editions, adding a new chapter on Glandular Dysplasia, new case studios, and many new photographs and diagrams.

When the first edition was published in 1977 the science of Colposcopy was relatively uncharted. The excellence of Dr. Cartier’s colpophotography, cytology, pathology, illustrations and correlations coupled with extensive clinical practice and observations offered a model and a road map for the future of the science. It is with deep gratitude that his colleagues and the future students of the science welcome this new edition to expand our knowledge even further.
