René Cartier

1924-2001

Docteur René Cartier was born in 1924 and died in 2001. Initially a gynaecologist, he very soon concentrated on research and was Maître de Recherches at the National Institute for Health and Medical Research. Formerly head of laboratory in the Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Paris, he became the director of a laboratory specialising in gynaecological pathology and cytology. A practitioner in colposcopy since 1952, he devoted an increasingly large part of this time to teaching. Each year, he organised courses in Paris on colposcopy and cervico-vaginal pathology in English and in French. Thanks to a collection of nearly 100 000 slides, of which this book only gives a faint idea, he could base his teaching upon constant comparison between histological and colposcopic characteristics. As he said, this was the only way of “training colposcopists capable of understanding what they see”.
